Tiahuanaco, located 20 km south of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, was the capital of the Tiahuanaco culture and is an impressive archaeological complex. Notable structures include Kalasasaya, Puma Punku, the Gate of the Sun, and the Akapana pyramid, which served as ceremonial centers and residences for the priestly elite. Although many buildings have not been preserved due to the harsh climate of the high plateau, the remains demonstrate a high level of technology and advanced architecture, as seen in Puma Punku, where the stones are almost perfectly carved.
ITINERARY
On this exclusive experience, our guide and private transport will pick you up directly from your hotel in La Paz and we’ll head toward the mysterious ruins of Tiwanaku, located southeast of Lake Titicaca, about 70 km away, with a scenic 2-hour drive along paved roads.
Once we arrive, our first stop will be at the Tiwanaku Site Museum, where you’ll get to see an impressive collection of lithic stones and ceramic pieces uncovered in the area. Among the most notable are the Keros vessels, which were ritually buried after ceremonies.
Next, we’ll visit Puma Punku, an enigmatic site known for its massive stone blocks, cut with astonishing precision, whose purpose remains a mystery. Then, we’ll continue our tour of the Tiwanaku Archaeological Complex, where we’ll explore its most iconic temples, including Kalasasaya, the Akapana Pyramid, the Bennett Monolith, and the Gate of the Sun, among other fascinating structures.
Tiwanaku was inhabited between 2000 BC and 1500 BC as a small agricultural village, but starting in 300 AD, it became a powerful administrative center and an important place of pilgrimage.
We’ll wrap up with a delicious typical lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we’ll begin our return to La Paz, where you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel in the city center.
